Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 11/08/13
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: Multiplication of larger numbers is going much better. Next week, we will start multiplication of decimals. I will be working with students who need extra practice on Monday, Nov. 11 during the first part of their recess. Any extra math fact practice or additional problems at home would be great.
Reading: “1-2-3, B.M.E…” That about “Sums” it up! We continued working on writing summaries. We wrote model summaries together in class that we can refer to, to see what a successful summary looks like. We chose a just right picture book to read this week, and we are writing a summary on the book. We will finalize those next week.
We are enjoying our read aloud, Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. Ask your child to describe this incredible library to you!
Science: We discovered what causes night and day on earth. It’s all about earth’s rotation on its axis. We also were able to prove which direction earth rotates, by applying our observations on earth and noticing that the sun appears in the eastern sky first in the morning and sets in the western sky. We applied this knowledge during our small group investigations with our earth and sun models and figured it out. Have your student explain/prove it to you!
Social Studies: We had a BLAST in our classes! It’s true! Students shared their landform projects, and we had so much fun! Their background information and presentations were wonderful. We enjoyed learning about various landforms such as the chocolate brownie/chocolate chip cookie valley, a Rice Krispie mountain, volcanic cupcakes, delta brownies, and many explosive volcanoes! The kids put lots of work and patience into projects. Many thanks to any help at home as well. We appreciate you.
Word Study: It is normal routine for us to have a pretest on Monday and words should come home that day. We continue to focus on word features and challenges appropriate for us.
Parent activity will be assigned on Monday for homework (choose 1) and S.O.S. (choose 1) on Tuesday evening. Tests will be on Fridays. Thanks for any support with these skills.
